How long does it take to set up a company in Dubai?

The honest answer: the licence is usually the fast part, and the bank account is usually the slow part. A typical free zone setup with one residence visa takes four to eight weeks from first call to a working bank account, but you can often trade on paper much sooner.

Here is how the time breaks down, step by step.

1. Choosing the structure — 1 to 3 days

Before anything is filed you need to decide between a free zone and a mainland company, pick the zone, and confirm your business activity. This is mostly a conversation, not paperwork. If you are unsure, start with free zone vs mainland and our comparison of UAE free zones.

2. Name and activity approval — 1 to 3 working days

The authority checks that your trade name is available and that your activity is allowed. Names that include a well-known brand, a country or a regulated word take longer or get rejected, so have two or three options ready.

3. Licence issued — a few days to 2 weeks

Once your documents are approved and fees are paid, many free zones issue the licence within a few working days, mostly online. Mainland licences can take longer when the activity needs approval from another government department (for example health, education or food).

What you get: the trade licence, the memorandum or articles of association, and the certificate of incorporation or registration.

4. Establishment card — 2 to 5 working days

The establishment card registers your company with immigration so it can sponsor visas. It is issued after the licence and is needed before any visa application.

5. Residence visa — about 2 to 4 weeks

If you take a residence visa, the steps are the entry permit (or a change of status if you are already in the UAE), the medical test, Emirates ID biometrics and the visa stamping. The medical and biometrics need you in the UAE, usually within one short visit.

6. Corporate bank account — 2 to 6 weeks, sometimes more

Banks run detailed compliance checks on every company. The more complete your file — business plan, source of funds, contracts or invoices — the faster it goes. Read how to open a corporate bank account in the UAE before you apply.

What slows a setup down

  • Missing or unclear documents — passport copies that don't match, unsigned forms, or unattested corporate documents
  • Activities that need extra approval — regulated activities add another authority to the queue
  • Being outside the UAE when the visa medical and biometrics are due
  • Name rejections — each new name adds a day or two
  • Weak bank files — the single biggest cause of delay after the licence is issued

How to speed it up

  • Decide your activity and zone before you start, not during
  • Send clear colour scans of every shareholder's passport on day one
  • Plan one UAE trip around the medical test and Emirates ID
  • Prepare your bank file while the licence is being issued, not after

Typical timeline at a glance
